Is
Your Workout
Overworked?
A
regular exercise program is an essential part of a healthy
lifestyle. It is probably the single most important factor
in weight control and can profoundly increase feelings
of well being. However, too much of a good thing can
have negative consequences. Dependence on exercise can
cause physical problems such as strained muscles, torn
ligaments, and stress fractures. Exercise can prompt
the release of endorphins, which elevate mood. However,
a person who is addicted to exercise can suffer a depression
if something gets in the way of a workout.
People who are exercise-dependent often use the high they get from exercise
to avoid a deeper problem. Exercise addicts frequently display some of
the same behaviors as people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol. Relationships,
jobs, and health may be placed at risk as exercise becomes the priority
in an exercise junkie's life. In many cases, the workout becomes essential
to the person's self-esteem. In addition, the high that the individual
feels can be very addictive, making exercise that much more desirable to
him or her. Although it is not known how widespread the problem of exercise
addiction is, researchers indicate that people with obsessive-compulsive
disorder are at risk. Individuals who suffer from eating disorders such
as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa are also more likely to have addictions
to exercise.
How much exercise is too much? If you exhibit any of the following symptoms
or behaviors, it may be an indication that you are over doing it. If you
have concerns about yourself or a loved one, consider professional help
from a counselor who specializes in behavioral medicine.
- You
become depressed or irritable if you miss a workout.
- You
have persistent pain or swelling in joints.
- Exercise
becomes a priority over seeing family or friends.
- You
will not miss a workout even if you are not feeling
well.
- You
regularly engage in strenuous exercise in order to
avoid gaining weight.
